Southern Hobbies strives to fill the niche of "local hobby shop" for the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, with an increasing national mail-order market. We strive to provide all the essentials for Aero-modellers , be it kit or scratch builders, and ARF flyers. We also cater for the RC Car and Boat fraternity, and have an extensive range of static plastic kits, school projects and gadgets.
Southern Hobbies is a family business owned by Francois Viljoen. They bought the business from previous owner Mike Geeringh in 2008. Francois also owns another company, Precipitec Irrigation (www.precipitec.co.za) which is involved in irrigation and groundwater exploration. He has run this company since 1995 and before that spent 10 years running a direct marketing company. He has been an avid modeller since 1971 and has built, owned and flown in excess of 200 aircraft and helicopters in his flying career. He also owns and flies a micro-light aircraft, but his primary love is flying model turbine jets.
The shop is jointly managed by Louis Genade and Harvey Appolis. Louis is a highly accomplished RC pilot with more than 15 years flying experience, who originally hails from Secunda. Louis will help customers set up and fly anything from helicopters, jets through to large scale aerobatic aircraft.
Harvey is a car specialist who has for the last four years competed locally in drifting competitions and has an encyclopaedic knowledge of RC electric cars. He is also an avid builder of plastic statics (e.g. Airfix, Revell, Italeri) and is very capable in advising customers on choosing the right project.
Southern Hobbies offers build and set-up services and flight training at the local flying clubs.
